Default Finding a psychiatrist in Calgary?

Hello.

After 20 years of ignoring my problems I have come to admit that I need help. I suffered with depression on my own, without medication, refusing to tell my family, friends (i don't have any), or even doctors all this time. This year what used to be recurrent... I hate to say, casual suicidal thoughts, have become more than that. They have become very real and increasingly persuasive. I'm terrified. What's more, the thought of sitting down with another person and being completely truthful with them about all of my problems, even someone legally bound to confidentiality, frightens me just as much. My life revolves around social seclusion and hiding behind a framework of lies designed to give the impression that I'm okay, I'm normal, I'm independent and strong. In reality I am none of those things.

Can anyone tell me how I might go about finding help in my city (Calgary)? Preferably help capable of issuing prescriptions should they think it necessary? Do I need a referal? Who should I talk to?

help.

I email Access Mental Health an inquiry. This was their response. Posting this in hopes that it may help someone else as well:

Thank you for your inquiry to Access Mental Health. You are correct, generally speaking to see a psychiatrist you will need a referral from your family physician or a general practitioner. A psychiatrist is like any other medical specialist in that it requires a referral from a physician. Your physician may refer you to a psychiatrist in private practice, which is still covered by a Alberta Health Care, or your physician may refer you to a psychiatrist through Alberta Health Services. If you are referred to a psychiatrist through Alberta Health Services, you are usually being referred to a mental health program where other mental health services are also available such as therapy and rehabilitation. The mental health services through Alberta Health Services are covered by Alberta Health Care. If you are in crisis and need to see someone right away, there are two mental health walk in clinics in the city. The contact information for the mental health urgent care clinics are as follows:

Sheldon Chumir Urgent Care Mental Health

1st Floor - 1213-4th Street SW

Hours: Monday-Friday 08:00 am until 10:00 pm; weekends and statutory holidays 08:00 am until 08:00 pm

Phone: 403-955-6200

South Calgary Health Centre Mental Health Urgent Care

1st Floor - 31 Sunpark Plaza SE

Hours: 08:00 am until 10:00 pm; 7 days per week

Phone: 403-943-9383

Lastly, if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us directly by phone at 403-943-1500 ext #2 (Office hours Monday through Friday from 08:00 am until 05:00 pm) to discuss your situation in greater detail.

It's been almost a month and I still haven't worked up the courage to see anyone. Just sending that email inquiry last night made me short of breath and nervous as hell.

You will be surprised how understanding and friendly they are at the urgent care centre. 1 in 3 women suffer from depression, you are not alone. You have nothing to lose and all to gain. It's time to stop surviving and for you to start living. I hope you will go and get the help you need and deserve. There is no shame just healing.

Update:

I went to a walk-in clinic two weeks ago. The doctor there sent me for blood tests to rule out physical explanations for my symptoms. After those came back clear she started me on an SSRI. I was also given a referral to Access Mental Health for a psychiatric assessment to be done. The people from Access Mental Health called me to do an intake interview on the phone, after which they told me I would be informed of my appointment time by mail. I am told it can take 2-3 months if you tell them it isn't urgent (which I did).
