Default Why not just keep the gum?

It is interesting that smokers will give up cigarettes by using nicotine gum, but then doctors insist on getting rid of the gum as well.

Why?

If the gum is working fine, why not just keep chewing the gum?

because the gum is still nicotine, and the user will grow an unhealthy addiction towards the gum, causing worse problems than before.

I work in a drugstore and the gum is just as addicting as the cigarettes. And more expensive.

Maybe if there was a variety of gums with decreasing amounts of nicotine, the user could continue chewing gum, but that wouldn't be ideal unless the person eliminated the nicotine as well. I suppose at least the gum wouldn't be so hard on the lungs.

Maybe some people could successfully switch to normal gum at some point?

I believe Nicorette has different levels of nicotine in them and yes switching to normal gum would help if you can get past the need for nicotine. I still think part of the problem is people don't realise that the nicotine gum is not to be chewed like a gum. It is supposed to be chewed two or three times and then stored in the gums beside the cheek and only used for the duration of a smoke when needed. My mom has them in her purse all the time but usually only needs one when she is in a group with smokers and she has a hankering for a smoke. I think that is ok so I would never tell her to stop using them. She has beed a quitter for over 7 years so there is a bonus for her as in they helped her all this time to avoid the desire she still has after all this time even tho people around her still smoke.

What is wrong with having the addiction? If you can afford the gum why not enjoy yourself?

I have yet to see anyone actually addicted to it as in they gotta have it in their mouth all the time. I think if it works you should use it and if later you can use the ones with less nicotine in it then better for you. It has to be better then the smoke if it is used right. I am addicted to mint gum and I think that is better then an addiction to many other things. I have to have a piece in my mouth almost all of the time and I think most people have an addiction to something, some not so good but if you found a nicotine gum that helps you not to smoke then I would see nothing wrong with it, there are worse things people could be on to quit. I know some find eating more helps them quit but they gain weight too so that is not a good thing.
