I did further research, found this site that also states that nicotine can be lethal at 0.5-1.0 mg/Kg, or 30-60 mg in an adult. The author references an earlier publication by Gosselin in 1988.
So yes, the other chemicals in tobacco are damaging, but nicotine is a poison, and taken in sufficient quantity, can be lethal.
