The best treatment I have found is Vicodin and Flexeril, but then I have chronic, intractable pain that originates from my neck.

Remedies for lower back pain don't work for my type of pain.

That is an interesting remedy. I didn't know water could be that effective for back pain. Is it because it helps the back or because it helps with weight loss? I know weight loss is a helper too. I find that my new bed helps as well. I bought one of those that sits up and raises the legs as well and when I have pain I sleep in a nearly sitting up possition for a night or so.

The stretching exercises will help prevent back pain instead of hard core exercises. We all know that certain exercises will not fit for everybody and it depends upon age and body conditions. The Physical therapist or expert chiros will help you identify the right work outs that you can follow and suggest the type of exercises you need. You can also refer irehab.com, they are good at giving long term solutions for back pain.
